SNA, LGB, or LAX: Which Airport Is Best for Disneyland?

If flight prices and schedules are similar, I would choose John Wayne Airport for a Disneyland trip. Long Beach Airport is another easy option when a nonstop flight fits your schedule. LAX is worth considering when the airport offers the only nonstop route, a much better departure time, or large airfare savings for your full group.

I have used all three airports. From my home in Anaheim, SNA gives me the simplest drive. LGB feels calm and manageable because the airport is small. LAX offers far more flight choices, but the pickup process and traffic add time after landing.

The shortest distance does not always produce the easiest trip. Your flight, luggage, transportation, and group size matter too.

At a Glance

SNA, John Wayne Airport
About 15 miles from Disneyland. Start here when fares and flight times are close.

LGB, Long Beach Airport
About 13 miles from Disneyland. Choose LGB when a convenient nonstop flight is available.

LAX, Los Angeles International Airport
About 40 miles from Disneyland. Compare LAX when you need more routes or the airfare difference is large.

Airport mileage tells only part of the story. Pickup steps differ at SNA, LGB, and LAX.

Why I Usually Choose SNA

Disneyland Resort lists John Wayne Airport as the closest airport to Disneyland. The drive to Anaheim stays within Orange County, which is the main reason I prefer SNA when the fares are close.

Freeway traffic still occurs, especially during busy hours. The difference is that local streets provide another route when the freeway slows. That flexibility feels useful after a flight, when everyone wants to reach the hotel and settle in.

The airport is easy to understand. Baggage claim, parking, rental cars, and ground transportation sit within one connected complex. Ride-app pickup at SNA takes place on the top levels of parking structures A2 and B2, plus the upper level of the Terminal C parking structure. Follow the signs before requesting your ride so the driver receives the correct pickup point.

SNA also works well for a rental car. The rental counters are on the lower level between Terminals A and B. Vehicle pickup and return take place on level 0 of parking structures A2 and B2. There is no long transfer to a separate rental facility.

For a family with young children, SNA offers useful departure features. Terminal B has a TSA Family Lane. A nursing lounge and children’s play area are located between Gates 11 and 12. These features matter more on the flight home than on arrival, but they make the last part of a Disneyland trip easier.

The weakness is flight choice. Some routes cost more or require a connection. I would not pay any price to use SNA. I compare the fare and schedule first, then decide whether the easier ground trip is worth the difference.

Why LGB Is More Than a Backup Airport

Long Beach Airport is about 13 miles from Disneyland. The small airport size is its main advantage, rather than the one-mile difference from SNA.

I have flown through LGB, and the shorter indoor walking distance makes the experience feel simple. After collecting your bags, you do not face the scale or crowds of LAX. This helps when your group includes children, older parents, or several suitcases.

Ride-app vehicles pick up on the outer curb in front of the terminal. Taxis wait outside the terminal near Parking Structure A. Long Beach Airport transportation information currently lists a $50 flat taxi fare to Disneyland or the Anaheim Convention Center. Check the official airport page before travel because fares change.

Rental-car offices are in the Airport Ground Transportation Center directly across the street from the terminal. Confirm the pickup and return directions in your reservation, especially when your company operates on limited hours.

LGB still has one important limit. It serves fewer destinations and fewer daily flights than LAX. A small airport loses much of its value when the trip requires a long connection or an inconvenient departure time. I would choose LGB for a useful nonstop flight, rather than airport size alone.

When LAX Is Worth the Extra Work

LAX sits about 40 miles from Disneyland. The distance matters, but the bigger difference appears between baggage claim and your Anaheim hotel.

Standard Uber, Lyft, taxi, and Opoli pickups use the LAX-it lot next to Terminal 1. After baggage claim, you either walk to the lot or take the free shuttle from the arrivals level. Travelers with several bags, a stroller, or tired children should count this transfer as part of the trip.

Private vehicles and certain premium ride services still pick up at the terminals. Check the current LAX ground transportation instructions and your ride app before landing because service categories and pickup rules change.

In my experience, weekday afternoon travel is the hardest, especially from about 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The drive toward LAX or south toward Orange County overlaps with commuter traffic. A crash, roadwork, or congestion inside the terminal loop adds more uncertainty. I do not build an LAX plan around the fastest map estimate.

My family still uses LAX at times. When several people travel together, a lower fare for each traveler adds up. LAX also offers more nonstop, international, and long-haul routes. Avoiding a connection or choosing a better arrival time often protects more of the vacation than a shorter airport drive.

This is where LAX makes sense. The flight itself must provide enough value to offset the longer ground trip.

Calculate the Full Cost, Not the Ticket Price

Airfare is only the first number. Compare the entire round trip for everyone traveling.

LAX airfare savings = fare difference per traveler × number of travelers

Net savings = LAX airfare savings minus extra round-trip ground transportation cost

Suppose a family of four saves $60 per ticket by using LAX.

$60 × 4 travelers = $240 in airfare savings

If transportation to and from LAX costs $120 more than SNA, the family keeps $120 in cash savings. The family then decides whether $120 is worth the extra pickup steps and travel time. These are sample figures, rather than current ride-app prices.

Your calculation should also include:

  • Rental-car rates and airport fees
  • Fuel or charging
  • Hotel parking
  • Car-seat or booster-seat rental
  • An extra hotel night caused by the flight schedule

Group size changes the result. A $60 fare difference saves $60 for one traveler and $300 for five travelers. This is why LAX often makes more financial sense for a larger family than for one person.

Do not overlook the schedule. A cheap late-night arrival might require another hotel night or leave your family too tired for the next morning. A well-timed flight might save money even when the ticket costs more.

If You Are Renting a Car

Allow more time for the return than the map suggests. A fuel stop, return line, vehicle inspection, and terminal transfer all take time.

I once experienced an unexpected delay while returning a rental car. Since then, I leave a wider margin before a flight. I follow the same rule at every airport, though LAX requires the most planning.

LAX opened its consolidated Rental Car Center in March 2026. Companies serving LAX now operate either at the center or at an off-airport location. Travelers using a company inside the center board a courtesy shuttle under the purple Rental Car Shuttles sign outside baggage claim. Off-airport companies follow a different transfer process. Check your rental company’s exact address and instructions before departure.

For an afternoon flight from LAX, I work backward in separate blocks. I allow time for the Anaheim drive, the rental return, the ride to the terminal, and traffic. Combining all four into one optimistic estimate creates too much risk.

Traveling With Children or Older Parents

The easiest airport changes when someone in your group has limited mobility or needs a child restraint.

SNA and LGB reduce walking and transfers. At LAX, the LAX-it shuttle is wheelchair accessible, and the airport provides assistance for travelers who arranged wheelchair service through their airline. Premium ride services and private vehicles have different curbside pickup rules. Review the current LAX instructions before choosing a ride.

For children, solve the car-seat question before landing. California Highway Patrol guidance requires children under age 8 to use a car seat or booster in the back seat unless they are at least 4 feet 9 inches tall. Children under age 2 must ride rear-facing unless they meet the state’s weight or height exception.

Bring your own seat, reserve one with a rental company, or confirm the correct restraint with a transportation provider. A standard ride-app request does not guarantee a child seat.

How I Would Choose

I would book SNA when its fare and schedule are close to the other choices. The Orange County location, shorter drive, and local street alternatives make it my first choice.

I would book LGB when it offers a useful nonstop flight. Its small size and curbside ride-app pickup keep arrival simple.

I would book LAX when the flight saves enough money across the whole family, removes a connection, or offers a schedule that improves the trip. I would also leave more time for traffic and any rental-car transfer.

Start with the flight you need. Then compare the real cost and every step between baggage claim and your Disneyland hotel. That process gives a better answer than airport mileage alone.
